Fire, building, mechanical, and electrical codes provide minimum life safety requirements. For buildings with hazardous materials, these codes are comprehensive and complicated and require specific technical training for successful implementation. The purpose of this series of webinars is to help prepare code professionals to review plans and inspect facilities for compliance with the hazardous materials provisions of the fire, building, mechanical, and electrical codes.

Course Objectives
At the completion of this webinar series participants should be able to:

  • Understand hazardous materials requirements of fire, building, mechanical and electrical codes.
  • Improve the quality of construction plan reviews and building inspections related to hazardous materials.
  • Review inspection checklists using code citations and other tools to identify hazardous materials.
  • Discuss hazardous materials and code requirements associated with special equipment, processes, and other systems.

Course Logistics
This Webinar series includes 10 sessions. The first hour of each Webinar is the ‘Boot Camp’ series designed for new inspectors, fire marshals, industrial hygienists and plan reviewers to help them understand topics such as Hazardous Materials Inventory Statements (HMIS), separation and containment, exhaust ventilation, and electrical classification of hazardous locations. The second hour is the ‘Special Topics’ series designed for experienced professionals, covering battery technology, ammonia refrigeration, distilleries, aviation facilities, hydrogen generation, reviewing how to use technical opinion & reports, and other equipment and processes. Specific topics for each series are listed below.

Mr. Will Winslow is a Certified Industrial Hygienist and a Certified Fire and Mechanical Code Inspector with 25 years’ experience in plan review and code enforcement. Mr. Winslow is a Professional Member of the ICC, and served on the ICC Fire Code Committee. He has submitted code changes and attended the public hearings associated with the development of the Codes since 1987. Mr. Winslow is a past National Codes Director for the Washington State Association of Fire Marshals. He has presented seminars covering the hazardous materials requirements of the fire, building, mechanical and electrical codes since 1990.

Mr. Richard Williams is a Certified Plans Examiner with over 5 years of experience in commercial and residential plan review. Mr. Williams is a member of WABO and the ICC. He is the vice-president of CWA Consultants, a structural engineering plan review and code consulting company in Washington State. In addition, he works closely with Will Winslow on a variety of hazardous material related projects.

This offering may qualify for International Code Council (ICC) continuing education units (CEUs) to maintain ICC certification. Please contact your local ICC Chapter or visit the ICC website at for more information. 1 hour of training qualifies for 0.1 CEUs. This training may apply to Inspector I and Inspector II certifications. American Board of Industrial Hygiene Certification Maintenance may be obtained for this activity. CANCELLATION POLICY: In the event you cannot attend the course, there are a few options -- you can either cancel your registration, transfer your registration to another course, or transfer your registration to another person. If you choose to cancel, we must receive your cancellation in writing with at least 1 week notice, and a refund will be issued minus a $50 cancellation fee. If you do not cancel and are a no-show for the course, your tuition fee is forfeited. If you choose to transfer your registration, please state the course you are transferring out of, and the course you are transferring into. Transferring to another course is permitted only twice per course registration. If you are unable to attend the course after the second transfer, the above cancellation policy applies.
