Class description

The Global Harmonization System (GHS) of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals is a system developed by the United Nations, in concert with international stakeholders to standardize the classification and labeling of chemicals around the world. The new GHS-compliant Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) may contain new hazard information that will require users to reassess the controls they have in place to insure appropriate worker protection. Though elimination, substitution and engineering controls are the first things to consider and implement, in many cases a critical line of defense is the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), particularly for eye and skin irritants, corrosives and sensitizers. Respiratory protection may be needed while engineering controls are being implemented.

This course will teach participants how to conduct a thorough PPE assessment and better understand what the current OSHA requirements are for the selection and use of PPE. There will be a review of the various regulatory standards that the PPE must meet in order to be used by--and properly protect--employees. The participant will learn to use a task hazard analysis form to evaluate potential hazards to which an employee may be exposed and what PPE may be used to protect the employee. This will include a workshop where participants observe workers and evaluate the potential hazards using the model form. Model PPE policies will be reviewed, and ways to modify the model while meeting the needs of the worksite will be discussed. Finally, participants will review training requirements for the proper uses of the PPE, and learn how to create and implement a comprehensive written PPE plan.
