Designed for personnel in the private sector interested in teaching the 10- and 30-hour maritime safety and health outreach program to their employees and other interested groups.

Emphasis is placed on those topics that are required in the 10- and 30-hour programs as well as on those that are the most hazardous, using OSHA standards as a guide. Course participants are briefed on effective instructional approaches and the effective use of visual aids and handouts.

This course allows the student to become an OSHA authorized trainer in the Outreach Program and to conduct 10- and 30-hour maritime courses in three areas:

  • Shipyard Employment, including ship repairing, shipbuilding, and shipbreaking
  • Marine Terminals
  • Longshoring

Trainers may document the training and issue cards to participants verifying course completion.

Prerequisites: Attendees must meet the following prerequisites to attend the course:

  • OSHA 5410: Standards for the Maritime Industry course --AND--
  • Three years industry experience in ship repairing, shipbuilding, shipbreaking, marine terminals, or longshoring --AND--
  • At least one of the following:
    • Two years of occupational safety and health experience (with a broad focus) in any industry --OR--
    • A degree in occupational safety and health from an accredited college or university --OR--
    • Certification as an Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Marine Chemist (CMC), or Certified Safety Health Manager (CSHM)

This is a trainer course so you will be assigned an OSHA Subpart to present your class of peers. Please bring any teaching or technical aids that will assist your training techniques, such as a laptop computer with PowerPoint capabilities.

Follow NE Airport Way south for 6.5 miles, this turns into NE 181st Avenue. Pass under I-84, and turn right at the next intersection onto NE San Rafael Street. Turn right onto NE 178th Avenue, and then turn left into the Sheet Metal Institute parking lot.

From Downtown Portland:
